How to Protect Your Little One From The Sun | SweetDreamers

Summer is here, and we can finally enjoy some time outdoors! However, when you have little ones to think about, it’s important to stay organized and prepared to keep them safe and protected from harmful UV rays. We want you to have a summer full of fun in the sun, so check out our sun safety guide below for tips to get the whole family summer-ready.

Sun Facts

- UV stands for ultraviolet light, a type of radiation energy produced by the sun. There are two types of UV rays.

- UVA radiation is the leading cause of skin cancer.

- UVB damage can cause sunburn, tanning, premature aging, and eye damage.

- Anyone exposed to UV light is at risk for these health complications.

- We all need a small amount of sun exposure since our bodies produce vitamin D when our skin absorbs sunlight. Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium, but it only takes a little time in the sun to get what’s needed.

- The sun’s UV rays can easily pass through the ozone layer and clouds.

How Can We Protect Our Family?

Wear Sunscreen

Use sunscreen with at least SPF 50+. When choosing a product, make sure it protects against both UVA and UVB rays. It takes about 30 minutes for sunscreen to absorb into the skin, so apply it before heading outside. While some products are labeled water-resistant, we recommend reapplying generously throughout the day—especially after your little ones have been in the water.

Avoid Peak Sun Hours

The sun is strongest between 11 AM and 3 PM. Depending on where you are and what you're doing, try to stay in the shade during these hours. If you're at the beach, consider using a pop-up sunshade or a large umbrella to create a shady spot.

Wear Protective Clothing

Loose-fitting clothing helps keep everyone cool while providing sun protection. Long-sleeve tops and lightweight long pants can offer extra coverage if the temperature allows. For beach days, consider dressing kids in specially designed rash guards for added UV protection. Hats are also a must—they help keep the sun off the head and provide shade for the face.

Stroller Shades

Stroller shades come in different styles, so finding the best fit for your stroller may take some research.

Canopy style – These drape over the stroller. Avoid full coverage, as babies can overheat. Look for a partial canopy that allows airflow and can be adjusted as the sun moves.

Parasol style – These clip onto the stroller frame like an umbrella. Most have a flexible arm so you can reposition them to block the sun.

Sunshade style – Similar to car window shades, these are lightweight and attach to the stroller frame or canopy. They allow air to circulate freely while keeping your baby shaded.

- If you're having trouble finding one, SnoozeShade offers a great selection of all of the above.

With a little planning and preparation, you can enjoy a fun and sun-safe summer with your family!
