Lambing at Butser

With the ‘Beast from the East’ now a distant memory, some of the Sweet Dreamers team spent a sunny, spring-filled morning at Butser Ancient Farm in Hampshire, meeting some of their newest arrivals. Here’s what we got up to...

After an eventful arrival—including successfully freeing our car from wheel-spinning in the wet mud—we were greeted with the most picturesque countryside views. With our rain boots on and our camera at the ready, we knew we were in for a fun morning.

On our way to the reception center, we were welcomed by a protective and stern-looking ram, who we later learned is named Norman, along with his fluffy flock. Butser Ancient Farm is not just any farm—it’s also a unique experimental archaeology site. From the moment you arrive, you can explore the archaeological reconstructions of ancient buildings from the **Stone Age, Iron Age, Roman Britain,** and the **Anglo-Saxon** period. Butser also grows **prehistoric crops** and cares for rare breeds of animals, including pigs, goats, and sheep (our personal favorites!).

We met up with Butser team member Rachel, who introduced us to the **adorable Basil the Lamb**. Basil, a one-week-old Jacob lamb, is being cared for by the staff at Butser. Since he was one of the calmer lambs, we were able to snap some sweet pictures with him and our very own flock of sheep. We even got to hold him for a little while! Just like any other baby, Basil needed a meal, so he popped back to the office with Rachel for some brunch.

After spending some time with Basil, we wandered through the ancient buildings, soaking in the history. We weren’t the only ones enjoying the farm—there were plenty of local school groups visiting, learning about all the fascinating things Butser has to offer. Before heading back to the office, we made our way up to one of the fields to meet more of the **adorable baby lambs**. Some were born that very morning and were already up and bouncing around! While they mostly stayed close to their mothers, we managed to capture some beautiful photos of them exploring the fields.

Overall, we had an **amazing time at Butser**, and we all agreed that meeting Basil was the highlight of our visit! We’d like to give a huge thank you to the Butser team for being so welcoming and for making our experience unforgettable.
