bonfire night in 2020
With large firework displays canceled this year, should we still consider fireworks and bonfires at home?
As current restrictions stand, we should avoid gathering with friends or family outside our household or support bubble. This applies to both indoor and backyard settings. In fact, anyone caught violating lockdown rules on household mixing, even outdoors, could face a fine starting at $200!
However, if you still plan to have a small firework display for your family in your backyard, be sure to follow the firework safety code below:
- Only buy fireworks with a certified safety mark
- Never drink alcohol while handling fireworks
- Store fireworks in a closed container
- Follow the instructions on each firework carefully
- Light them at arm’s length using a long match or taper
- Stand at a safe distance
- Never approach a firework that has been lit—even if it hasn’t gone off yet
- Never carry fireworks in your pocket or throw them
- Direct rockets away from spectators
- Always supervise children around fireworks
- Light sparklers one at a time and wear gloves
- Never give sparklers to a child under five
- Keep pets indoors
- Don’t set off fireworks after 11 PM
**Top tip for sparklers:** Stick a sparkler into the top of a carrot—this makes it easier for little hands to hold while keeping their skin away from the heat. Keep a bucket of water nearby to dispose of used sparklers, as they remain extremely hot even after burning out. Sparklers should never be given to children under five, and all children should be supervised at all times.
Bonfires can also be dangerous if precautions aren’t taken. Keep these safety tips in mind if you plan to have a bonfire:
- Check for small animals, like hedgehogs, before lighting your bonfire.
- Never use gasoline or other flammable liquids on a bonfire.
- Don’t build bonfires near trees, fences, or buildings.
- Never light a bonfire under power lines.
- Do not burn fuel (gasoline, diesel), household trash (plastics), aerosol cans, lighter fluid, tires, fireworks, gas canisters, foam, paint, or anything wet.
- Never leave a bonfire unattended.
- Ensure the bonfire is fully extinguished and the area is safe before leaving.
We hope these guidelines help you have a safe and fun firework night!
